About YogaGypsys...
YogaGypsys
is a gorgeous little sanctuary of a place set in a palm grove
with its own fruit and vegetable garden, set just back from one
of the most unspoiled beaches of North Goa.
The accommodation is shared (two to
a room), either in one of the three Portuguese style stone cottages
(which have ensuite bathroom with shower - some have kitchen facilities),
or in one of the palatial beach huts with views directly out to sea.
The huts share separate bathroom/shower facilities. Hot Chai
(sweet spicy indian tea) and herbal teas, lemon and ginger are available
free, and large containers of mineral water are set out for you to
keep your thirst quenched throughout the day.
The food is freshly prepared on the premises
daily. Fresh fruit/veg juices with a substantial breakfast
/brunch after the morning session and the evening meals (mostly
vegetarian with the occasional sea food/Goan fish dish) lovingly
prepared by the experienced in house chef.

|
The Yoga platform is set into the red volcanic
rock, used to construct the houses, and provides natural
shelter. It is shaded with palm leaves, bamboo and silk,
and offers a a lovely place to practise with the only sound being
the waves of the sea and the rustle of the wind in the trees.
For those on a budget that wish to try and find
cheaper accommodation, there is room for a small number of
non-residential course attendees (3 maximum on each week).
If you wish to take this option, you will still be expected
to take part in meals, and will need to pay a contribution for the
food and use of the Yogagyspys facilities - £10 per day
should cover food and chai etc.

About the Courses...
This is a very special yoga event
...
There will be a daily 3 hour
yoga session in the mornings (after a cup of chai and some fruit
and nuts if you like). Over the two weeks we will be awakening,
strengthening and releasing body, spine and mind, leaving the
rest of the day free for the beach or exploring the local area if
you wish. The first week is open to all and is an excellent introduction
to 'Scaravelli inspired yoga' appropriate for everyone from beginner
to experienced practitioner.
|
|
On both weeks there is
also a second 3 hour workshop available for those looking
for something more 'intensive' (second workshop will be before dusk -
I like to time the evening sessions to finish before sunset so there is
time to go to the beach for a swim or just to sit as the sun goes down).
|
|
Over the two weeks
the morning sessions will be mostly spent dedicating time to
clarifying structural relationships as well as exploring
the role of breath in relationship to posture, inviting us
to be more 'whole' in our movement. The afternoon workshops will
be open to exploring what has been discovered - answering questions
that come up for you, finding ways of moving and breathing to resolve
postural issues that come to light and generally exploring the joy of
being completely present to our yoga practise and to life.
Learning to move from
the central axis of the spine in harmony with the movements
of the breath will provide the foundation of an ever evolving yoga
practise dedicated to clarifying perception and improving quality
of life.
|
|
I would like to point out that
all classes are entirely optional as I am more concerned
with people getting precisely what they need at the pace that suits
them. I feel that forcing ourselves to practise yoga is deeply counterproductive.
Whereas practising for the love of learning, for the pleasure of occupying
our bodies as well as the present moment, and just for the way it makes
us feel, places yoga in its rightful place - a privilege, not a discipline
. If I want to impart anything, it is that - the
art of joy as well as self-empowerment in yoga practise.
|
|
Dedicating time to deep
yoga practise without the usual distractions of everyday life is
a profound thing to do. In such beautiful surroundings the practise
can effect deep changes. So if you are not used to regular practise,
either of the two weeks will have an intense effect on body and mind.
I will also be providing a good deal of information designed
to give you a lifetime foundation for understanding as well as experiencing
how the yoga works. So these 'intensive' weeks are appropriate for
dedicated practitioners (which includes enthusiastic beginners
or anyone that is looking for the
inspiration to become dedicated) as well of course
as those that have worked with me before.
|
Throughout all three weeks I will
be on hand for some one to one help if there is something specific
you would like to look at between sessions.
|
|
Just to be clear - I
am very keen that you only do as much as is appropriate for you... The course
structure is designed to offer you all the information and understanding
at my disposal - this doesn't mean that you have to take it all
on board. I find that when people feel free to listen to your
own needs rather than following the teacher's agenda, then everyone
seems to get exactly the right information at the right time. Most
people find it useful to attend the majority of the morning sessions
and then treat the afternoon exploratory workshops as optional - this
also makes room for various trips and excursions if you want to explore
a bit of Goa.

...with charter flights direct to Goa from Gatwick
or Heathrow. There are many companies dealing in charter
flights - Tavelpack has proved good value in the past, and
Monarch airlines sometimes have very good deals (tel 0871 622
4299), but do shop around. Charter flights to Goa can only be booked
with accommodation (by Goan law) but you get round this by booking one
with what is called dormhouse accommodation
(which you don't need to use of course - and it doesn't do anything
to the price of the flight). The charter flights without hotels
are generally released later on in the year (any time from late August
onwards usually) - basically after the tour companies have sold a proportion
of their package deals, and charter flights tend to be cheaper than the
scheduled flights.
With the new eco tax, direct flights to Goa currently
range from £500 to £1200 .. if you find anything for
the old price of £450 then snap it up!
Virgin Atlantic (on www.lastminute.com) have had a good deal (£475
last time i looked) travelling to Goa via Bombay.
|
|
The other
option is to fly a scheduled flight to Bombay (or anywhere else in India
you might fancy) and then take an internal flight, train or bus to
Goa ... handy if you are wanting to include a bit of exploring India
or wish to stay longer than the 4 week maximum that the charters offer.
If you need help with internal Indian
travel arrangements, contact Doreen Ramos at Speedy Travel
in Goa (00 91 832 2273 208). Or of course you can book your
own internal flights online with one of the trusted internal services
(Kingfisher airlines, Indian airlines, Sahara and Jet airways
all have a good reputation and can be booked online)
If you go for the charter option
you can get 1 to 4 week deals - I would recommend at
least 2-3 weeks to have time to arrive and really get a feel
for the place, and if you can afford the time, take the 4 week
option (time absolutely flies out there).
If you are arriving at Goa and
coming directly to YogaGypsys, we will arrange for a taxi to pick you up
at Dabolim airport (it is a one and a half hour taxi ride from the airport)...
PLEASE NOTE:
YogaGypsys will be available for my students from the 3rd January 2008 onwards.
If you arrive before this date, you may need to make alternative accommodation
arrangements before the 3rd.
|
If for any reason you miss
it - don't worry, there are always plenty of taxis on offer (a taxi to YogaGypsys
cost around £15 - tell the driver to take you to Palm Grove
or Yab Yum on Asvem beach.)
|
|
YogaGypsys is the entrance
directly before the Palm Grove entrance. It is also immediately
after the Temple on the beach.
|
.
If you are arriving a while
before the course starts and wish to stay nearby, there are plenty
of beach huts to choose from along the beach, or if you fancy spending
a bit of money, you could stay at one of the Guest houses at Asvem on
the Morjim-Mandrem Road - might be best to pre-book this on the internet
if possible. A far cheaper option is to take the taxi a little further
down the road to Arambol, where you can get a reasonable beach hut for around
£5 per night (the taxi driver will probably be able to help if you
are at all worried).
|
Additional information...
£475 includes 7 nights
accommodation and food at YogaGypsys. ie. 5th-11th or 14th- 20th
Jan. I am also happy to pay for your accommodation at Yogagypsys for the
nights of 12th and 13th January if you are staying for both weeks (worth
£60). There is a maximum of 12 residential
and 3 non-residential attending students on each course. Non residential
students attending both weeks get a £50 discount
on the second week's tuition.
The non residential places are mostly
for people who are willing to make their own accommodation arrangements,
or for those on a budget who would rather stay in one of the coco
huts nearby, (prices vary from around £10 - £25 per night).
You can also arrange more plush single accommodation for anything
between £45 and £120 per night (just search on the internet
for some of the nearest guest houses and
hotels - Asvem beach is on the Morjim - Mandrem road).
Non residential charge for tuition is £250 for a week (or £450
for both). There is also an additional charge of £10 per day
for taking part in the food with the group (includes free bottled water,
all day chai, fruit and herbal teas as well as a substantial breakfast and
evening meal). I will pay the cover charge for use of the YogaGypsys
platform and mats etc. out of the tuition fee.
|
|
Extra nights at YogaGypsys
can be arranged for before the first course (arriving no earlier than
the 3rd Jan at the moment) and after the last course for around
£30 per night, but those of you not staying on for the yoga whilst
the courses are still running will need to make room for new incoming
guests. Of course if you are staying for more than one week of yoga, there
will be no problem staying on extra nights at YogaGypsys in between... Depending on when people
turn up and how full each of the courses is, it might be possible
to stay for a day or two longer either side of the course - I will coordinating
things together with Cathy of YogaGypsys...you can email Cathy direct
on yogagyspsys@yahoo.com.
If your flight dates keep you
in Goa longer than you can stay at YogaGypysy - don't worry !! Once
youthere, you will have no difficulty finding accommodation in one
of the local beach huts, or further afield if you care to look
(as I mentioned before, around an hours walk from Asvem, the accommodation
at Arambol beach is quite a bit cheaper ).
There will be some optional excursions for you if there
is enough interest - to see the dolphins or to go to one of the markets
etc.... Cathy has most of the information about these things.
|
IMPORTANT:
Don't
forget that you need a valid VISA, only available from
your nearest Indian High Commission, or from the internet.
A Tourist Visa costs around £40 - £60
and lasts for 6 months, and must be obtained before departure
it can take up to 2 or 3 weeks by post - or it can be done in a few days if you pay more, or even in an afternoon
if you go there in person (expect Indian beurocracy!). For purpose
of visit just put "tourism", or "holiday". You will be asked
to provide 2 names and addresses in India as referees. Feel free
to use the same ones as me:
